Spine Center, Yale

General Information

Spinal injuries and diseases are among the most complex and difficult ailments found in modern life. Millions suffer from the broad range of disease processes that can affect the spine, which include degenerative conditions such as lumbar and cervical disc diseases and rheumatoid arthritis, spinal cord and vertebral tumors, spinal cord malformations, trauma, and infections. Debilitating pain and impaired function often keep people from working and enjoying normal lives.

The Yale Spine Center is a major referral center for adult and pediatric patients with any kind of acute or chronic spine injury or disease. The center offers comprehensive care including evaluation and surgical treatment for fractures, scoliosis, disc disorders, arthritic and degenerative disease and tumors of the spine.

Orthopaedists and neurosurgeons, utilizing state-of-the-art diagnostic imaging and surgical techniques, work to ensure the best possible results for spine patients at Yale by working together in a collaborative, interdisciplinary environment.

Some new procedures being performed at the center include: vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty for vertebral compression fractures in osteoporosis patients (which offers 80-90 percent pain reduction or disappearance within 48 hours) and an innovative lumbar disc replacement arthroplasty for sufferers of severe degenerative cervical and lumbar disc disease (which heals in six weeks, with full range of spine motion and without screws in the vertebra).

The center's goal is to provide an individualized treatment plan that improves the condition and quality of life of each patient. Surgeons work closely with Yale's physical and occupational therapists, who create realistic rehabilitation plans and instruct on self-help exercises at home.

Special services offered by this center include:
