Emergency Medicine

General Information

YNHH Emergency Departments serve the Greater New Haven area, providing access to emergent and urgent care 24/7, 365 days a year. Three campuses at York Street (YSC), Saint Raphael (SRC), and the Shoreline Medical Center (SMC) function as an integrated unit. All ages are seen at SRC and SMC, while the YSC has a separate pediatric ED. Yale physicians are all boardcertified in emergency medicine and provide care for life-threatening illness and injuries, in addition to any acute illness, exacerbations of chronic illness, or injury requiring urgent management.

  • State-of-the-art resuscitation rooms for trauma and critical illnesses
  • Treatment of acute/chronic illness or injury
  • Urgent care areas
  • Acute stroke intervention
  • Chest Pain Center for evaluation and testing
  • Crisis Intervention Unit for assessment and treatment of mental illnesses
  • Project ASSERT: Health Promotion Advocates for evaluation and referral of patients with substance use disorders
  • EMS New Haven Sponsor Hospital coordinating prehospital care for Greater New Haven
  • Prehospital physician response team for emergent incidents. The "Sharp Team" provides medical oversight and assistance at multiple casualty incidents, complex/difficult extrications, and rescues; provides for safety and medical needs of emergency personnel operating at incident scenes

  • 24-hour in-house coverage by specially trained senior trauma surgeons; prompt availability of subspecialists including stroke teams
  • Chest Pain Center has the highest level of accreditation
  • Referrals provided for thousands of substance abuse patients through Project Assert
  • 24/7 physician attending coverage for the Crisis Intervention Unit and a recently opened 12-bed locked observation unit
  • Three board-certified toxicologists
  • Helipad on top of YNHCH accommodates two helicopters and provides quick access
  • Separate radiology suite with two CT scanners
  • YNHCH pediatric transport team available 24/7 to provide critical care to infants and children en route to the hospital
  • Accredited stroke center

Distinguishing factors (pediatric):

  • First pediatric trauma department in Connecticut
  • Outstanding emergency facilities include 16 patient rooms and two resuscitation trauma rooms with a range of support staff, including child life and pediatric social workers who assist in providing child- and familycentered care
  • Support provided for local injury prevention programs and emergency-related high school education projects
  • Regularly scheduled outreach appointments to surrounding EDs bringing pediatric simulation to these hospitals to assist in preparedness for pediatric emergencies in community settings
