Biography

A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania (BA, 1995) and Tufts University School of Medicine (MD, 2001), Dr. Koo joined the Case Western Reserve School of Medicine faculty in 2008 and was subsequently recruited to Yale University in 2013. Dr. Koo’s primary clinical and research interests lie at the intersection between neurology and sleep medicine, in both of which he is board certified. Dr. Koo is particularly interested in the restless legs syndrome (RLS) and periodic limb movements during sleep (PLMS), two very common sensorimotor entities that occur directly before or during sleep. His work concerning RLS and PLMS has focused on different levels, including animal modeling, epidemiology, and human genetics. Dr. Koo has received awards from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine for some of this work. Dr. Koo is a leading expert in the association between the cardiovascular diseases and the sleep-related movement disorders and has authored several peer-reviewed scientific publications on this topic. He has served on tasks forces and section committees in the American Academy of Sleep Medicine for his expertise in RLS and PLMS and is on the editorial board sleep-related peer-reviewed journals. Dr. Koo sees patients both at Yale New Haven Hospital and the Connecticut Veterans Affairs Healthcare System, where he is chief medical director of the sleep medicine program. Dr. Koo is dedicated to the care of patients with both neurologic and sleep disorders.
