Patients visiting New Haven should plan for construction

Back to news list

If you are a patient visiting a Yale Medical Group provider, construction for New Haven's Downtown Crossing project along route 34 westbound may affect your regular route to Yale Medical Group practices and to Yale-New Haven and Smilow Cancer hospitals.

On Thursday, May 2, the Downtown Crossing Project, a major development project to encourage business, retail and housing development, will permanently close the Exit 3 off-ramp on Route 34 westbound, located between College Street and the Air Rights Garage. All westbound traffic will be diverted to Exit 2 and Exit 1. A new traffic signal has been installed at the intersection of Exit 2 and MLK Boulevard to facilitate the change in traffic patterns.

Route 34 westbound Exit 2 is expected to close in June. By the fall of 2015, most of the major work should be complete and new, improved traffic patterns will begin.

These changes and may affect your access to Yale-New Haven Hospital, Yale Physician's Building and Temple Medical Center main entrances and parking facilities. Even if your regular route into the city is not changing, you may run into delays and should allow for extra time to get to your appointment.

This work begins Phase 1 of the Downtown Crossing project which will reconnect the Hill neighborhood with downtown and encourage business, retail and housing development. The first development of Downtown Crossing will be the construction of 100 College Street located on the parcel of land east of College Street near the Air Rights Garage.

We will continue to post updates on this website as construction progresses.

Please be advised:
