Pituitary Program

The Yale Pituitary Program is a recognized resource for the evaluation and management of patients with pituitary disease and is a regional center for pituitary microsurgery and radiosurgery. The program offers a high standard of care for children and adult patients with pituitary disorders.

Advances in diagnostic and treatment procedures have broadened the number of specialties that provide the most up-to-date disease management. Physicians within each specialty (endocrinology, neurosurgery, neuroradiology, interventional neuroradiology, radiation oncology, and neuropathology) have a specific interest and expertise in treating a variety of neuro-endocrine diseases. These include hypopituitarism, pituitary tumors, Cushing's disease, acromegaly, prolactinomas, and adult growth hormone deficiency syndrome. Related neuro-endocrine diseases (carcinoid, islet cell neoplasms) and conditions involving the adrenal glands, such as adrenal tumors, Cushing's syndrome, Addison's disease, hyperaldosteronism, and pheochromocytoma are also diagnosed and managed. Evaluation and treatment for reproductive disorders, such as hypogonadism, amenorrhea, and hirsutism are provided in conjunction with the Yale Center for Reproductive Medicine

Combined with state-of-the-art technology at Yale-New Haven Hospital, the Yale Cancer Center and the Yale-New Haven Gamma Knife Center, the Pituitary Program is uniquely positioned to offer every treatment option available, including dynamic pituitary magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), inferior petrosal sinus sampling, 3D conformal radiotherapy, intensity-modulated radiation therapy, stereotactic radiosurgery and transphenoidal surgery. The Yale-New Haven Gamma Knife is the gold standard for stereotactic radiosurgery and is the only dedicated stereotactic radiosurgical facilty in Connecticut.

Our long-standing pediatric endocrinology clinic provides the same services and excellence of care that adults receive, but in a pediatric setting at the Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital.

Special services and treatments offered by this program include:
  • Consultation and second opinions
  • Co-management with primary care physicians
  • Dynamic testing of all hypothalamic-pituitary axes
  • Pituitary hormone replacement therapy
  • Inferior petrosal sinus sampling
  • Stereotactic radiosurgery
  • Trans-sphenoidal surgery of pituitary tumors
