Gastroenterology

Yale Gastroenterology faculty members work closely with colleagues in the departments of surgery, diagnostic radiology, laboratory medicine, and pathology to provide state-of-the-art diagnosis and treatment of digestive diseases in a coordinated and comprehensive manner. Outpatient diagnostic clinics at the Temple Medical Center complement an active inpatient service, offering routine and highly specialized endoscopic and non-endoscopic studies.

Outpatient endoscopic procedures include esophagogastro-duodenoscopy (EGD) enteroscopy colonoscopy sigmoidoscopy capsule endoscopy esophageal and colonic stents and the treatment of GAVE radiation proctitis and GI bleeding disorders with the argon plasma coagulator (APC). Advanced procedures are performed as well, including ERCP and EUS with FNA (see Interventional Endoscopy Program below).

Non-endoscopic studies include liver biopsy, esophageal and anorectal manometry, 24-hour ambulatory pH studies, secretin studies, gastric acid analysis and breath tests for lactose intolerance, bacterial overgrowth or H. pylori.

The Interventional Endoscopy Program is a tertiary referral program for therapeutic pancreaticobiliary endoscopy and sphincter of oddi manometry (SOM). It is the busiest program of its kind in New England. The physicians have extensive experience performing endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) and related procedures, as well as endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) with and without fine needle aspiration (FNA), celiac plexus block, endoscopic sphincterotomies, (including minor papilla, precut and pancreatic duct), biliary and pancreatic stent insertions, stricture dilations and common bile duct stone extractions.

The key to effective disease management at the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Program & nbspis coordinated care among specially trained physicians in a variety of specialties, including gastrointestinal medicine, pathology, radiology, colorectal surgery, interventional radiology, pediatric gastroenterology and GI surgery. Physicians meet weekly to discuss each patient's care and related diagnostic, medical, and surgical issues.

The Gastrointestinal Motility Program is a multidisciplinary program that brings together a team of eight gastroenterologists, surgeons, pathologists and radiologists to provide the latest diagnostic and treatment services to patients with hard-to-diagnose gastrointestinal disorders. The program provides evaluation for a wide array of common and rare gastrointestinal disorders.

The motility program offers:

The Bravo pH Monitoring System, a catheter-free instrument that measures acidity levels in patients suspected of having gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) The SmartPill Capsule, a new technology available at only about a dozen medical centers around the country that measures pressure, pH and temperature to identify where abnormalities in intestinal transit are located. Impedance monitoring, a catheter-based system that enables doctors to diagnose non-acid reflux.
