Transplantation Center, Yale-New Haven

The Yale-New Haven Organ Transplant Center (YNHTC) is a multi-disciplinary group of physicians and caregivers, dedicated to the care of patients with end-stage organ failure who might benefit from transplantation. A range of transplant and support services are offered. Active programs within YNHTC include kidney, liver, and pancreas transplants that seek to provide state-of-the-art therapy for patients suffering with kidney failure, liver failure, and Type I diabetes mellitus. The clinical programs are actively engaged in cutting edge clinical research initiatives designed to continually improve the outlook for transplant patients.

YNHTC integrates specialists within Yale Medical Group (YMG) who are recognized physicians and surgeon experts in their field, prepared to deliver the most advanced treatment approaches available. They include physicians specializing in anesthesiology, internal medicine, pediatrics, surgery, transplant immunology, kidney diseases, liver diseases, diabetes mellitus, and transplant surgery. The transplant team also has an outstanding group of dedicated professionals - nurses, physician assistants, financial coordinators, nutritionists and social workers - to support the needs of patients and their families.

Additionally, the YMG physicians have been actively engaged in clinical research that leads to new and improved treatments. Active clinical trials have included most of the newer immunosuppressive agents that have been developed for use among transplant recipients during the past 10 - 12 years, and continuing work promises to provide similar progress as we look forward to newer and better therapies. YNHTC and its research partner, the Yale Interdepartmental Program for Vascular Biology and Transplantation, work closely together, seeking to translate new research discoveries into meaningful new treatments.

Patients referred to YNHTC will undergo a detailed evaluation to determine whether organ transplant is the most appropriate treatment for them. Transplant surgeons and physicians meet weekly to establish the most appropriate treatment recommendations for each patient. The meetings include those specialists most appropriate for the specific disease process (for example, liver disease, kidney disease, or diabetes), focusing on individualizing the approach for each patient.

Patients receive care in a dedicated transplant outpatient environment, as well as in a dedicated transplant inpatient unit at the Yale-New Haven Hospital.
