Cancer Center, Yale

Yale Cancer Center was founded in 1974 as a result of an act of Congress in 1971 that declared the nation's "war on cancer." It is one of a network of 39 Comprehensive Cancer Centers throughout the country, designated by the National Cancer Institute, and the only one in southern New England. The Cancer Center brings together the resources of the Yale University School of Medicine (YSM), Yale-New Haven Hospital (YNHH), and Yale University. Yale Cancer Center's missions include the following areas:

Patient Care

Yale Cancer Center is committed to caring for patients as individuals in a warm and compassionate environment that includes the facilities at YNHH as well as the outpatient areas in the Yale Physicians Building, at One Long Wharf, and throughout the YSM campus.

As the delivery of cancer care has become ever more complex, it is essential that multiple disciplines are included in the diagnosis and treatment of patients. In response, Yale Cancer Center has developed multidisciplinary clinical programs to care for patients diagnosed with cancer. The clinical programs allow physicians and specialists at Yale Cancer Center to focus their expertise on specific types of cancers enabling them to provide superior care to our patients through a patient-friendly system of care led by a patient care coordinator.

At Yale Cancer Center, the internationally and nationally recognized physicians provide unparalleled cancer expertise and are leaders in both the treatment of cancers and the development of innovative treatment strategies.

Research

In the fight against cancer, Yale has been at the forefront of understanding the fundamental mechanisms of cancer biology and in developing effective therapies for the treatment of cancer. Yale Cancer Center harnesses the resources of the Yale School of Medicine and Yale-New Haven Hospital to advance cancer research, prevention, and patient care, as well as community outreach and education.

There is a long history of excellence in cancer research at Yale University. The Yale School of Medicine is home to the country's first university-based Medical Oncology section, and its faculty pioneered many breakthroughs in cancer treatments, including the first successful use of chemotherapy in 1942. Since then, our faculty has developed and characterized a number of therapeutic agents that are still in use today.

Today, Yale Cancer Center scientists make many important contributions in basic science, in addition to focusing on translational research, an approach through which laboratory discoveries are quickly and efficiently integrated with clinical patient care. Yale Cancer Center emphasizes the molecular origins of cancer, stressing targeted treatments that are more specific to a particular cancer and less debilitating to patients. Through the eight multi-specialty research programs and eleven shared resource facilities at Yale Cancer Center, our mission is to continually build on our knowledge of basic and translational cancer research and to push for accelerated progress for novel therapies.

Cancer Prevention and Control

The revolution that has occurred in our understanding of cancer has confirmed our knowledge that environmental or exogenous agents-of a chemical, viral, or physical nature-can cause cancer. We now can observe, on a genetic level, how an agent like tobacco smoke or sunlight can "turn on" certain genes that induce cancerous growths. We also know that not everyone who is exposed to the same agents develops cancer, and an active area of research aims at identifying genes that interact with environmental factors to determine individual susceptibility to cancer.

Researchers in our Cancer Prevention and Control Research Program are studying these and many other aspects of cancer prevention. Themes within the program include chemoprevention, environmental factors and cancer, genetics epidemiology of cancer, cancer biostatistics, racial disparities in cancer and cancer control/cancer survival, and behavioral factors in cancer. These studies cover a broad spectrum of research approaches, all aimed at reducing the incidence, morbidity, or mortality associated with various cancers in Connecticut and beyond.

Cancer Survivorship

New treatment options and innovative cancer therapies are helping cancer patients to live healthy lives long after their cancer has been cured. The growing number of cancer survivors requires new resources and healthcare specialists to care for the special concerns cancer survivors may have, including medical, social, and emotional worries. The Connecticut Challenge Survivorship Clinic at Yale Cancer Center is the first dedicated, multidisciplinary resource for adult cancer survivors in the State of Connecticut to provide patients and their families with vital information on cancer prevention, wellness, supportive services, and the latest health research related to cancer survivorship.

Community Outreach

Yale Cancer Center offers several programs for patients and members of the community. Several support groups, many of which focus on specific cancers, are offered to cancer patients and their families through the Yale-New Haven Hospital, in New Haven, and at the Shoreline Medical Center in Guilford. In addition, Yale Cancer Center celebrates survivors at the Annual Cancer Survivors Day in June and the Holiday Party in December.

The "Understanding Cancer" and "Ask the Expert" lecture series are popular monthly evening events for patients and their families. The lectures are free and are open to the public each month focuses on different cancer disease areas or emotional aspects of a cancer diagnosis.

Yale Cancer Center also hosts a weekly radio show on cancer diagnosis, treatment, and prevention on WNPR - Connecticut Public Radio each Sunday evening at 6:00. "Yale Cancer Center Answers" provides listeners with the latest information on cancer, clinical trials, and resources available to cancer patients and survivors throughout the state of Connecticut.

The National Cancer Institutes Cancer Information Service (CIS) is emblematic of the Cancer Center's responsibility to extend its knowledge and resources directly into the many communities we serve. Through its Partnership Program, the CIS reaches the medically underserved, including minority groups and people with limited access to health information and services, with cancer information. To effectively reach as many people as possible, the CIS partners with state and regional organizations that directly serve these audiences. By pooling resources toward common goals, the CIS and its partners design programs with wider reach and greater impact.

Visit www.yalecancercenter.org for more details about the center, including information about cutting-edge clinical trials currently available at the center.

Inpatient and outpatient facilities for Yale Cancer Center are located at the Yale Physicians Building, 800 Howard Avenue, New Haven, Connecticut, at One Long Wharf Drive, New Haven, Connecticut, and at Yale-New Haven Hospital, 20 York Street, New Haven, Connecticut.
