Cytology
The Cytology Service is responsible for the screening of cervical-vaginal samples and the interpretation of diagnostic specimens obtained from body fluids, scrapings or fine needle aspirates. For gynecologic specimens (e.g. Pap Smears), the service offers the latest in advanced methodologies to ensure the best possible evaluation for our patients. Both the ThinPrep and SurePath technologies are supported for cervical-vaginal evaluation, as well as HPV and STI testing.
The Fine Needle Aspiration Biopsy (FNA) service provides an evaluation of superficial, palpable lesions and deep organ-based lesions. Frequently this technique offers an alternative to a surgical biopsy. Samples may be obtained under radiographic guidance by a radiologist, or, for more superficial lesions, by the surgeon or pathologist. When performed by the pathologist, a preliminary diagnosis is rendered within the hour. Advanced diagnostic technologies including flow cytometry and molecular marker evaluation may also be used to facilitate the diagnosis of FNA specimens.
Cytopathology provides a convenient outreach program, offering special services for patients and physicians throughout Connecticut.
