Pediatric Nephrology

The Yale Pediatric Renal Service comprises nephrologists with expertise in the care of children with acute and chronic renal diseases and hypertension. Faculty physicians, including our renal fellows, maintain a shared clinical practice so that patients become familiar with, and feel comfortable relating to, all members of the section. Infants, children and adolescents with the following problems are often referred for care: glomerular diseases nephrotic syndrome hemolytic uremic syndrome systemic disorders with renal involvement (e.g. SLE) tubular interstitial diseases fluid/electrolyte/acid-base disorders disorders of water metabolism hypertension urinary tract obstruction congenital abnormalities of the kidneys and urinary tract including vesicoureteral reflux urinary tract infections inherited renal diseases, including polycystic kidney disease nephrolithiasis proteinuria and hematuria.

The care and management of children with end-stage renal disease includes the following: home peritoneal dialysis, in-center outpatient hemodialysis and renal transplantation. Treatment is specifically designed to meet the needs of children and their families. The Renal Transplantation Program was the first program in Connecticut offering this modality to children. This program is jointly managed by the members of Pediatric Nephrology and colleagues in Transplant Surgery. All children who receive a renal transplant are cared for in age-appropriate pediatric units, where a special emphasis is placed on their psychosocial, emotional, developmental and organic needs.
