Maternal-Fetal Medicine

Providing care for women whose pregnancies require special monitoring, treatment and care, Yale Maternal-Fetal Medicine is one of the most experienced and busiest in the region. The specialty offers state-of-the-art approaches to caring for women with high-risk pregnancies related to diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, and genetic disorders, among other medical conditions that can complicate a pregnancy.
Yale Maternal-Fetal Medicine offers physicians who refer patients with high-risk pregnancies the option of co-management, with the Yale team coordinating care directly with the referring practitioner. A care plan can be developed with the community obstetrician whether a case requires intensive oversight by the team or consultative guidance alone.

Maternal-Fetal Medicine at Yale pioneered the development of chorionic villus sampling (CVS) and fetal blood sampling (FBS) and has the most experienced team for these procedures in New England. In addition, fetal echocardiography is provided by the most experienced specialists in the northeastern United States.

YNHH's 18-bed Maternal Special Care Unit, located in the West Pavilion, is an inpatient unit dedicated solely to the needs of women with high-risk pregnancies. A 50-bed Newborn Special Care Unit is uniquely designed to care for infants requiring intensive care.

Services provided by Maternal-Fetal Medicine include:
  • First trimester risk assessment for Down Syndrome
  • Targeted ultrasound (Level II)
  • Fetal therapy, including percutaneous umbilical blood sampling (PUBS) and intrauterine transfusion
  • Genetic testing and counseling
  • Antenatal testing
  • Amniocentesis and CVS
  • Recurrent Pregnancy Loss Program, offered in conjunction with Yale Reproductive Endocrinology
  • Management of pregnancies complicated by inherited or acquired thrombophilias
  • Diabetes management
