The Child Study Center provides care for children and adolescents with psychiatric, developmental and behavioral disorders in a spectrum of integrated inpatient and outpatient settings. Clinical faculty include child and adolescent psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, nurses, child therapists and other affiliated mental health professionals.
The Child Psychiatric Inpatient Service in the Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital provides intensive, specialized diagnosis and treatment for children from early childhood through age 16 who are suffering from severe psychiatric, developmental, and behavioral disorders. Under the leadership of child and adolescent psychiatrists, the inpatient service is nationally recognized for providing high quality, intensive clinical intervention in a warm, family-oriented environment. The inpatient service specializes in the diagnosis and care of children and young adolescents with complex neuropsychiatric, behavioral and developmental disorders, including children with tic syndromes, obsessive/compulsive disorder, conduct disturbances, developmental disorders, depression, appetite disorders, and suicidality. The service has special clinical programs for children with psychiatric disorders that are related to medical conditions and cognitive difficulties. The inpatient school offers academic evaluation and educational planning. The partial hospital program is closely coordinated with the inpatient service and community-based care. The inpatient and partial hospital programs are also closely integrated with the Child Study Center's intensive, home-based mental health services.
The outpatient programs in the Child Study Center offer a comprehensive range of evaluation and treatment services for infants, children, pre-teens, adolescents and their families. Under the medical leadership of child and adolescent psychiatrists, children are provided evaluation and treatment for emotional, developmental, behavioral and psychiatric disorders, including disorders of development, autism and pervasive disorders, emotional disorders, conduct and behavioral disturbances, and attentional, learning and communication disorders. Special services are provided in relation to school issues, child custody and placement, and families experiencing stress, including the impact of trauma. Outpatient services are closely integrated with intensive, home-based mental health treatment programs, school-based clinical services, and community-based crisis and trauma services.
The Child Study Center Specialty Clinical Services are internationally recognized for the evaluation and treatment of children and adolescents with complex disorders. These include autism, Asperger's syndrome, pervasive developmental disorders, Tourette's syndrome and tic disorders, obsessive/compulsive disorder, developmental and emotional problems of infants and young children, psychiatric disorders of individuals with intellectual disability and other complicated neuro-psychiatric conditions.
Child Study Center faculty members provide the full range of current treatment approaches, including psychotherapy, pharmacological treatments, family therapy, cognitive and behavioral treatment, and psychoanalysis, as well as educational consultation.
